What is Compost?
Compost is the product resulting from controlled biological decomposition of organic matter; such as yardwaste and small brush, that has been sanitized through the generation of heat and stabilized to the point that is beneficial to plant growth.
Where is the Compost available?
Compost is available through the facility of Organic Resources, located at 4340 Trade Dr. South Bend and is available to anyone.
How is Compost made?
The product compost is created through the grinding of materials such as yardwaste and small brush that is then placed in several rows. Those rows will be monitored for about 6-10 months bringing them to a cooking temperature of 160 degrees. During the cooking process, with the natural elements, we will also turn the rows to move the material around. Once up to temperature, the rows are then ready to be screened. The screening helps seperate any material that did not break down during the cooking process and makes the compost into a finer material, alsmost like dirt.
When is Compost available?
Our goal is to have compost available on a year round basis; however mother nature can prevent the product from being available at times. Also the type of product compost is, winter months do not provide the best quality product. Therfore compost is not typically sold from December through end of February due to snow.
