ENG-SERVICE: 2018 Lamppost Lighting Program

The City of South Bend’s Lamppost Lighting Program assists homeowners with lighting enhancements in their neighborhoods through front yard lamppost installations. 

The 2018 Lamppost Lighting Program is piloting solar-powered lampposts for residential lighting. The solar lampposts are easy self-install posts that must be mounted in a level area within approximately five feet of the edge of sidewalk, but cannot be installed in the tree lawn. Assistance with installation is available upon request. 

There is a limit of one lamppost per household and the homeowner is responsible for any maintenance of the lamppost. The City’s Division of Engineering will be monitoring the lampposts to measure the success of the pilot program.

Who is eligible for the Lamppost Lighting Program?

The program is being offered to all homeowners within the city of South Bend. For 2018, the City has selected two target areas based on income, number of vacant lots and need for lighting in the neighborhood; however, all homeowners can apply.

Homeowners who live within these target areas will pay a lower share of the total cost of the program:
• Within target areas, homeowners pay 10% of total lamppost cost: $40.00 

• Outside target areas, homeowners pay 50% of total lamppost cost: $200.00 

Target areas are listed in the brochure. Payment is due at time of application and can be mailed with a check or dropped off to the Division of Engineering.

Do I need professional help to install the lamppost?

How do I sign up for the program?

What is the process to get a lamppost?

Fill out and mail in application with payment by October 10 to the Division of Engineering at 227 W Jefferson Boulevard, Suite 1316, South Bend, IN 46601.

Engineering will review the application and will give approval via email or phone within seven business days. Once approved, Engineering will call to have utilities located on the homeowner’s property.

Engineering will identify the location for the lamppost after utilities have been marked on the property. Homeowners have five business days to contact Engineering to coordinate an alternate location if desired.

Homeowners will be notified via email or phone about the date and location of lamppost pick-up. At distribution, homeowners who requested assistance with installation, can schedule their date and time.

Installation must be completed by the homeowner within two weeks of distribution. Engineering will inspect lampposts after the two weeks to ensure proper installation.
