The City has begun to deploy 22 environmental monitors in various locations across South Bend. The initiative will allow residents to better understand air pollutants and other environmental factors at a hyperlocal scale.
How is the City measuring environmental factors in South Bend?
The City has installed devices capable of precisely measuring the surrounding air quality and temperature, utilizing South Bend Open Wi-Fi to communicate with each other and improve data accuracy. Each device measures:

Where are the City's environmental monitors located, and what do they look like?
The environmental monitors are located on city-owned infrastructure (fire stations, light poles, park buildings, etc.) in strategic locations across town. Sites of environmental monitors have been chosen specifically to ensure minimal disruption of operations and aesthetics. The devices, provided by TELLUS Networked Sensor Solutions, include a white casing with a circuit board. The casing measures 5.3” x 7.6” x 2.7”. A visual of one such device can be found below:
Why is this an important initiative?
Until now, air quality measurements that inform public health guidelines in South Bend have come from a singular device at a singular location. Air quality, however, can vary significantly across neighborhoods, and even within neighborhoods. Measurements from these new devices located across South Bend will allow residents to understand the pollutants they might be exposed to at their places of work and homes. Ultimately, this data will inform the City's policies and programs as we mitigate and respond to extreme heat and air quality emergencies.

AirNow.gov also hosts physical activity guidelines for vulnerable groups (children, elderly, and those with respiratory illness). You can also sign up for public health alerts through Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).
How can I host an environmental monitor?
In addition to the City's monitors, residents and organizations can host their own TELLUS device at their home or place of business to improve the accuracy of South Bend's environmental monitoring. Members of the public can visit the TELLUS website, purchase a monitor, and register it as a public device to contribute their data to the community model.
