After a multi-year federal procurement process, the City of South Bend has been awarded funding to reconstruct Bendix Drive from Lathrop Street to the bridge over the Indiana Toll Road. While the City has actively patched this portion of Bendix Drive over the past few years, the new funding allows for full-depth reconstruction of the concrete pavement, which is past its useful life.
What is the project?
Bendix Road will undergo a full-depth reconstruction of the concrete pavement from Lathrop Street to the bridge over the Indiana Toll Road. The project also includes a new multipurpose trail on the east side of the street, signal modernization, and new curb ramps and approaches. Once Bendix Drive is reopened to full traffic, the street will be a three-lane corridor – two travel lanes with a center turn lane.
What is the project’s start and end date?
Work is expected to begin Monday, March 30. The anticipated completion date for this project is mid-September 2020; however, this schedule is subject to change given the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
During this same timeframe, St. Joseph County will also be working on the bridge over the Indiana Toll Road. The County’s bridge project is expected to start on the same date as the City’s project.
What is the detour route?
During construction, Bendix Drive between Cleveland Road and Lathrop Street will remain open southbound only. Traffic restrictions will be in place; however, access to businesses and homes will always be maintained. When the west lane on Bendix is under construction, the Nimtz Parkway and Bendix Road intersection will be closed.
To get to Brick/Cleveland Road, northbound motorists and semi-trailers will be detoured west on Lincoln Way West, north on the U.S. 20 Bypass to the Brick/Cleveland Road exit.
Bendix from Lathrop to Lincoln Way West will not be impacted by this construction and will continue to operate as it does currently.
