When can I get a taxi cab license or inspection?

City of South Bend Taxi Cab Licensing & Inspections are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This is a yearly license that runs from October 1 through September 30.

Who can apply for a taxi cab license?

Driver Requirements:

  • Criminal History Reports from each City you have lived in for the past 20 years.
  • Driving Records from each State you have lived in for the past 10 years.
  • Must possess a Public Passenger Chauffeur's License or CDL with PPC Endorsement, or a For-Hire Endorsement to drive a taxi cab.
  • Driver's license can only be from Indiana or Michigan, depending where you live, and address on license and application must match.
  • Statement from a licensed physician certifying that, in the physician's opinion, you are not suffering from any disease of infirmity which may make you an unsafe or unsatisfactory driver.
  • Test results from a 10 panel drug test.
  • Application Fee of $5.00 and $16.00 upon approval.
  • Note:  If you have had a Felony in the past 20 years, or a Misdemeanor in the past 10 years, you are not eligible for a Taxi License in the City of South Bend.
  • This is a yearly license that runs from October 1 through September 30.

Taxi Company Requirements:

  • The building location must be in a commercially zoned area.  Please contact the Area Plan of Commission at (574) 235-9571 for zoning information.
  • Company must own or control at least 6 vehicles and have them available for calls 24 hours a day.
  • Vehicle Inspection costs are $55.00 per vehicle.
  • This is a yearly license that runs from October 1 through September 30.
  • A Company Annual Business License of $100.00.
