WW-INQUIRY: Setting Up Auto Pay for Utility Bill

Explains the various options for automatic payments, how to enroll and when to expect the payment to be made.

What are my options for enrolling in auto pay?

Customers can enroll in either of two Auto-Pay options:

  1. Auto-Pay from a checking or savings account (bank drafting)
  2. Auto-Pay through your credit card

You will still receive monthly billing statements while enrolled in Auto-Pay.

Who is eligible for Auto-Pay?

Anyone with a South Bend Municipal Utilities account is eligible to enroll in Auto-Pay.

In rare cases, customers with a history of insufficient funds or returned checks may be removed from Auto-Pay and not be allowed to re-enroll.

When do my funds get drawn?

Payments are drawn down on the bill due date or on the following business day. Customers cannot select a day for payments to be withdrawn.

Auto-Pay should begin with the second bill that generates after your request has been processed.

Auto-pay will be removed without notice when the Utility receives notice from your bank that the payment was rejected or declined. The Utility does not receive notice when credit cards are set to expire, so it cannot provide advance notice to customers if they are removed from Auto-Pay due to an expired card.

How do I enroll in Auto-Pay?

Customers can enroll in bank drafting in two ways:

1. Auto-Pay through bank drafting

Download an application for bank drafting here. You must include a voided check with your application. For Auto-Pay through a savings account, you will likely need to contact your financial institution for the appropriate routing transit and bank account number to be listed on the Auto-Pay application.

The completed bank drafting application can be submitted to the Utility Customer Service Office in several ways:

Fax: 574.235.5645
Mail or submit in person to: 125 W Colfax Ave, South Bend, IN 46601

Customers can also set up bank drafting through the online billing portal here. Once logged in, click the "Auto-Pay" tab on the left side of the screen and under "ENROLL," select "Choose OTHER ACH."

2.. Auto-Pay through credit card

Customers can set up automatic credit card payments through the online billing portal here. Once logged in, click the "Auto-Pay" tab on the left side of the screen and under "ENROLL," select "OTHER CC." Once enrolled, you cannot modify Auto-Pay enrollment while there is a payment pending.
