Free Smoke Alarm Program


Smoke Alarms are an inexpensive and effective way to help keep your family safe if a fire occurs in your home. They are proven to reduce death and injuries caused by home fires.



What is the free smoke alarm program?

The free smoke alarm program is a partnership between the South Bend Fire Department and the American Red Cross with which you may apply and have a smoke alarm installed in your private residence free of charge.

The free smoke alarm program is available nationwide.


How do I apply for a free smoke alarm?

You can fill out this online form here and a Fire Prevention officer will contact you to schedule the installation.  

You may stop by the Central Fire station at 1222 S. Michigan in South Bend between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday-Friday and pick up an application.


How are smoke alarm installations scheduled?

  • The South Bend office of the American Red Cross schedules smoke alarm installations every Thursday for residents of St. Joseph County.
    • American Red Cross office at 574-234-0191
  • The Fire Department installs smoke alarms in conjunction with scheduled neighborhood blitzes and individual requests based on crew availability.


How much does the smoke alarm program cost?

There is no charge to participate in the smoke alarm program and the installation is also free.
