ENG-INQUIRY: St. Joseph County Projects

Occasionally, construction projects occur within the City of South Bend that are not owned or overseen by the City, but rather fall under the juristiction of St. Joseph County. Bridge-related projects are the most frequent example of this type of project, as St. Joseph County maintains all bridges within City limits. Below is a list of active construction projects within the City of South Bend that are overseen by St. Joseph County. Questions and concerns related to these projects should be directed to the County's Department of Public Works at 574-235-9626.

Bridge #193 - Portage Avenue over the abandoned Conrail Railroad

St. Joseph County is replacing the existing bridge structure with a three-sided culvert, which will span the abandoned Conrail Railroad bed and future home of the City of South Bend's Coal Line Trail. Portage Avenue, between Angela and Elwood, will be closed beginning 9/18/2017. The Contractor, Rieth-Riley, by contract has 75 days in which to remove and replace the bridge and have Portage Avenue opened to unrestricted traffic. Construction of the bridge replacement is expected to be completed in 2017.
